Belt tightening

Here in our little hamlet, the city leaders have chosen to enforce a pay cut on all city employees. This of course includes the cops.

Have other departments gone through similar budgetary measures? Or how has your department been affected by the economy?

No pay cut...but no pay raises either. And the whole debate/fight to get special duty/hazardous duty pay? Dead in the water. We'll manage. We always have. Hopefully it won't hurt you guys too much!

Mr Deputy's Department actually gave them a pay raise.. But then told them they have to take 160 hours of furlow time through out the year. It comes out of their check 4 hours per check so it basically eats up their pay raise.

They have also cut OT out. unless absolutely needed. They changed the way they get paid for court as well. use to be they had to cancel their supneas 12 hours before hand or they still got paid. Now they have to clear them 3 hours before needed to make it to where they dont get the 3 hours for each supnea.

Sucks because that leaves us waiting until the last minute on days he has them...It especially sucks because they give them to him on the days he works so he comes home from a 12 hour shift at 6am and goes to sleep but has to wake up at 10am to get ready and wait for them to call him or not. And if they dont call him he goes in if they cancel then he only gets to go back to sleep for another 1.5 hours before needing to get up to leave ( he has a 45 minute commute).

I hate those days... those are the days i actually worry with his lack of sleep. wow ok that was long...LOL :)

No cuts at my hubby's department and they are even hiring new people soon cause of all the crime. BUT, many, many times when they were down a few people, they did not fill the spots therefore making the existing guys run around like chickens with their heads cut off. They usually have been filling the spots by holdovers of before and after shifts lately. Seems that some of the lower crime towns further west from here are even laying off people. Fire AND police :(

It's so hard. County baby. We didn't raises, but definately no cuts. I really hope this economic downfall comes to an end soon. It's ridiculous. Hopefully the city will get it's rear in gear. You guys are awesome and will make it through.

That's not good news to hear. I worry about this sort of thing time to time, but like Dori said, we always manage. Still, there is so much uncertainty right now and you just never know what's going to happen! I am so thankful HF has a job and that so far there are no cuts or layoffs or anything, but there are always rumors. And aren't new guys usually the ones that get the shaft?

Hi there. Cops wife here. Oh that's not good. The city that The Mr. works in tried to have the union make cutbacks a few months ago. Thankfully it was a no go. It always drives me batty when people think that cutting back the police staffing and or pay is a good idea. I think they've lost it. How can they think that cutting back on public safety = any kind of good. Hope that in the spring they give out pay increases!!

I'm a little late to the party with my comment here, but thought I'd share anyway. We are county too....they will be doing a job study of all county employees in the next year to find out where they can make cuts. I expect us to loose at least 2 officers, and I think I might loose my job too (I work in Administration). We have a big target on our back because we have the most employees & the biggest budget due to the jail.
As far as who gets cut...at our agency it will be the newest guys, but at some places, senority doesn't matter. It all depends on what type of oversight/rules/bylaws/etc an agency has. If there is nothing to protect senority, they can lay-off whoever they want! Ah, the wonderful world of public service!!

no pay cuts or layoffs.... the union agreed to a pay freeze for a few years, while most other employees are getting pay cuts so I guess that is good.
